How To Clean Your Dishwasher

I know, I know. It doesn’t seem fair that we should have to clean something that is…made to clean other things. Just as annoying: having to pay for garbage bags. The irony! But that’s another story.

So yes. If you weren’t aware, you do need to clean that dishwasher of yours as overtime soap scum and food can build up which reduces the efficiency of the dishwasher. I try to get to ours about once a month, or whenever I remember. Here are the three easy steps using only two ingredients: white vinegar + baking soda.

Steps

  • Clear the drain and check for build up: Remove the bottom dish rack. Check out the drain and remove any gunk or food caught there. Next, wipe down any soap scum/build up with a wet rag (I use my  all-purpose cleaner and spray down the whole inside and then wipe. You can skip this step!)
  • Put vinegar in dishwasher: Place a cup of white vinegar in a dishwasher-safe container on the upper rack of the machine. Run the dishwasher through a hot-water cycle. This will wash away grease and grime as well as remove any odors.
  • Baking soda rinse: Sprinkle about one cup of baking soda across the bottom of the dishwasher. Run a short, hot water cycle. That’s it. You’re done!
